The Klondike Gold Rush is one of the best-known chapters in contemporary Canadian history, and certainly the most famous in Yukon history. Each year, thousands of tourists descend on Dawson City to trace the gold prospectors’ steps. Parks Canada interpreters guide them through the Dawson Historical Complex, composed of about twenty preserved period buildings, where [ ].   The story of the Serum Run was detailed in a bestselling book by cousins Gay and Laney Salisbury, The Cruelest Miles (W.W. Norton & Co., ), but the most compelling recounting was given in a book which had been written 73 years earlier, by the famous Alaskan musher Leonhard Seppala, who carried the serum over the treacherous ice of Norton Sound.

The Pacific Crest Trail Data Book (Wilderness Press) contains lines of text that describes detailed milestones such as towns, resupply locations and water sources in a small booklet. This used to be a critical resource but apps that provide the same information have largely supplanted the data book. These 20 Trails In Alaska Will Lead You To Unforgettable Places. Hiking in the 49th state is what dreams are made of. The mysterious lakes that pop up out of nowhere, high elevations that provide sweeping vistas, lush rainforest with light breezes and cool shade, gleaming glaciers that sparkle in the distance and miles upon miles of “pinch me because I can’t believe this is real” moments.

The U.S. side of the Chilkoot Trail remains closed this morning as the river water has risen to over 18' in Dyea. At least a half foot higher than yesterday when these photos were taken. We anticipate that the trail will remain closed throughout the day and into tomorrow morning. Chilkoot Trail. I'm visiting the starting and ending points of the Chilkoot trail this week and remembering my 5-day hike several years ago. For scenic beauty and historic Gold Rush charm, it would be hard to beat this trail in the US. It's a challenging hike because of distance and the range 5/5(53). Alternatively, Chilkoot Trail to-day book a shuttle to the trail head and set off for a day hike.

For those interested in a guided option, join Sockeye Cycle Co. for their Skagway Triple Adventure. You'll bike through a temperate rainforest, hike 2 miles on the Chilkoot Trail, then take a relaxing float. Additional Physical Format: Online version: Lotz, Jim, Chilkoot trail to-day.
